Walk benefits special needs students

Special needs students in all levels — elementary, middle school and high school — in the West Portsmouth School District will benefit from a walk being planned for April 9 from noon until 4 p.m. at The Complex at 1420 13th Street in West Portsmouth.

“I’ve been working on that for a little while now,” walk organizer Sue Sines said. “My husband and I have been going around handing out flyers trying to get people involved. I’ve been asking everyone I can. I’ve been going to businesses, getting sponsors. It’s going to be outside The Complex around the football field.”

Sines said her oldest grandson is autistic and her son got her involved in programs to help special needs students.

“Everything just started to fall into place,” Sines said. “There’s more than autism with kids at West. There’s different special needs kids down there.”

Sines said there are a couple of ways people who want to walk can let her know and get prepared to walk.

“They can come to The Complex to Sue’s Corner,” Sines said. “Or they can call me at 740-370-2602.”

Sines said the price to walk is $25 per person. Or, if they have four or more people in their group, the cost goes to $20 and everybody receives a T-shirt for participation in the event.
