Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware says the public’s assistance is invaluable in battling crime and he took the time Tuesday to credit such information in an arrest.

The Portsmouth Police Department has made an arrest in a recent series of car break-ins. Richard A. Johnson (Aka: Andrew Sapp), 23 of Portsmouth, was charged with four counts of theft and two counts of receiving stolen property.

Ware said citizen tips were vital in the investigation and subsequent arrest of Johnson.

“As always, the Portsmouth Police Department encourages the public to call with any information in relation to knowledge of any crime,” Ware said.

Ware said tips can be relayed through the Dispatch Center at 740-353-4101, or by calling the Detective Bureau at 740-354-1600. He said callers can choose to remain anonymous when relaying any information.

Johnson was arraigned for the offenses in Portsmouth Municipal Court when he appeared this past Friday for a recent drug arrest.
