RUSSELL, Ky. — The Bon Secours Kentucky Health System (BSKHS) of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH) is gearing up to host two breast cancer related events Tuesday, Feb. 23. There will be breast cancer support group at noon, and a ‘Look Good…Feel Better meeting at 3 p.m.

The OLBH breast cancer support group will meet at noon in the Diabetes Education Classroom at Bellefonte Centre 1000 Ashland Drive. OLBH cardiologist Michele Friday, M.D., will be the speaker at the meeting.

Michele Friday M.D. said she plans to talk with the group about increased risk of heart disease for cancer survivors. She said there are more risk factors for cancer survivors based upon a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology on Feb. 1, 2016.

“Their was study with 110,000 patients who had been survivors of certain cancers, and it was shown that they have a significant risk of heart disease above and beyond patients who don’t have a history of cancer,” Friday said.”So, I think it is just about bringing this awareness to patients who have had cancer. And we find that patients who have had cancer they could have higher blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol problems than patients who don’t have histories of malignancy. And those risk factors which we know are risk factors for patients without cancer become more of a problem for patients who have had a history of cancer.”

Raising awareness is the objective, making sure patients are informed of the risk factors.

“So it is just a matter of raising awareness so that patients must also realize that they are also slightly more at risk for hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia which are the risk factors for heart disease whether you have cancer or not,” Friday said.

Kevin Compton BSKHS, Communications and Advocacy Specialist, said they are honored to have Dr. Friday to speak, and that the group is beneficial to all who participate.

“Our Look Good….Feel Better group is beneficial to those dealing with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment,” Compton said.”While those who have been affected by breast cancer, whether by personal experience or by experiencing it through a family member or loved one, can benefit from our breast cancer support group. We are honored to have Dr. Michele Friday speaking at that meeting and would encourage attendance at both breast-health related events.”
