The Portsmouth Parks and Recreation Committee, Inc. has established their fundraising events for the year ahead.

The group met on Feb. 16 and decided to do a Spring Craft Bazaar in the spring; a reverse drawing; an Hawaiian themed dance in the Summer; a Triple 5 Poker Run in the fall and Pancakes with Santa in the winter.

Committee chairman Rich Saddler said Diana Ratliff spoke about the Arbor Day event to be held on April 23, and asked if the committee would be willing to handle the food concession for the event with all proceeds from the concession sales to go to the Parks and Recreation Committee. She also suggested contacting Portsmouth Ambulance about possibly donating the food and cooking equipment for the event.

The committee that placed new swings in area parks also too the opportunity to discuss their next project, the handicapped swing set in Tracy Park and Mound Park. Saddler said he would get some type of design for the swing, a list of materials and prices and that he would also contact local businesses for material donations. It was also decided committee members would supply any additional labor needed. Once this is all completed, Saddler said they would need to discuss it with Portsmouth City Manager Derek Allen. They also discussed holding more clean-up days in the parks and it was decided to just do a monitoring process of the parks.

Saddler updated the committee on the IRS 501c4 status. The IRS contacted Saddler and said they would prefer the committee to switch to a 501c3 tax status at no additional cost to the committee.

The committee also held an election of officers to fulfill the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. Rich Saddler was selected as director, Amy Partlow was selected for secretary/treasurer, Kismet Bratchett will be events chairman, Christine Pennywitt – fundraising chairman and Paul Penix will be community projects chairman. Jane Saddler and Sammie Ishnmael were elected board members.

Steve McGinnis discussed the need to replace the wooden fence around the horseshoe mound in Mound park and said some donations for replacement are in the works.
