Portsmouth man arrested after shooting

A Portsmouth man has been arrested following a shooting incident over an alleged argument about a dog, according to a press release from the Sioto County Sheriff’s Department.

Arrested was Richard A Ockerman, 53, of 208 Pershing Avenue in Portsmouth.

Ockerman has been charged with two counts of felonious assault, a felony of the 2nd degree and one count of improperly discharging a firearm into a habitat, which is also a felony of the 2nd degree.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said that his 911 center received a call on January 8, 2016 at 8:14 p.m. to respond to 208 Pershing Avenue in Portsmouth.

The caller advised that there had been a shooting,

Sheriff Marty V. Donini stated that deputies, along with EMS and detectives, responded to this location. Upon arrival deputies were able to locate a possible suspect and detain him along with a loaded firearm.

Two victims were transported to Southern Ohio medical center to be treated and later transferred to Saint Mary’s in Huntington. Both victims are listed in stable condition.

Detectives were able to process the scene and start an investigation. During this investigation information was obtained that the two males were arguing over a dog stinking up the house that resulted in one man being shot and a female being hit with stray buckshot during the shooting.

The victims have been identified as John LeMaster, 58, and Mary Ockerman, 76, both of 208 Pershing Avenue in Portsmouth.

Ockerman is currently being held on a $60,000 bond and will appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court on January 11, 2016.

Sheriff Marty V. Donini stated that this is still an ongoing investigation that could result in more charges being presented to the Scioto County grand jury.
