The New Boston Police Department (NBPD), New Boston Fire Department, New Boston Village Administrator and Portsmouth Fire Department responded to fires in the early hours of Tuesday. The fire resulted in several being sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

“At 2 a.m. this morning (Tuesday), NBPD dispatch received several calls of a house fire on Oak Street. The New Boston Police Department officers Sergeant Josh Carver and Patrolman Bryan Jordan arrived on the scene first and found the house at 4223 Oak Street and 4219 Oak Street on fire,” said Steve Goins, Captain of the New Boston Police Department. “The New Boston Village Administrator Steve Hamilton, who lives in the neighborhood, also came to the scene to assist the patrol officers. Carver, Jordan and Hamilton were able to gain entry into the house at 4223 Oak and carried out the resident Bernice Law, 81. Ricky Law, another resident of the house age 58, was able to walk out of the house on his own.”

He said the New Boston Fire Department and the Portsmouth Fire Department arrived on the scene and were able to put the fires out. Portsmouth Ambulance sent several ambulances to the scene to help the injured.

“Carver, Jordan and Hamilton were transported to SOMC (Southern Ohio Medical Center) for smoke inhalation. Carver was treated and released, Jordan and Hamilton were kept for observation,” Goins said.

He said Bernice Law was also transported to SOMC and was later air lifted to Huntington for treatment of her injuries. Rickey Law was transported to SOMC and was held for observation for his injuries.

“The residents at 4219 Oak Street were able to get out of their house without injury,” Goins said.

Preliminary reports indicate the fire started at 4223 Oak Street and spread to 4219 Oak Street.

“The New Boston Fire Department, Portsmouth Fire Department along with the Ohio Fire Marshal’s office will be conducting the fire investigation,” Goins said. “The cause of the fire is still unknown, at this time.”

The fire marshall’s office is involved in the investigation due to the injuries.
