A Scioto County man is dead in what appears to be a case of a shooting, in which a man was attempting to protect his family. Dead is Timothy Ray Carpenter, 25, of Burton Road, South Webster.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his 911 communication center received a call from 11 Leonard Street in Scioto Furnace at 11:39 pm Monday. Donini said the caller stated somebody was outside of the house shooting through the door and bullets were going into the house. He said that during the call, the caller advised that the male subject outside with the gun had been shot and they needed help.

Deputies and detectives along with emergency medical services responded to that location to find Carpenter lying in the front yard. The Scioto County Coroner Dr. Darren Adams responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased upon arrival.

Donini said from the initial investigation and interviewing the witnesses it appears that it is a case of self defense with the home owner protecting his family.

Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn has been consulted on the case and after the investigation has been completed it will be presented to a Scioto County grand jury.

Donini the victim’s body has been sent to the Montgomery County Morgue for an autopsy and that evidence is being sent to BCI&I in London, Ohio.

He said the investigation is ongoing and that anyone with information should contact Detective Dan Malone at 740-351-1099
