The report of the sexual assault of a seven year old girl is under investigation by the Portsmouth Police Department. Detective Sergeant Jim Charles said he received a report on Sunday by a family member that the sexual assault on the child had occurred.
“She was reportedly sexually assaulted by a person known to the family,” Charles said. “It is important that the public know that no one is loose on the general public. This is someone known to the family.”
Charles said, while there is a suspect, there is more information that has to be available before they affect an arrest.
“We’re waiting on some reports to come back. There’s just some more investigative steps that we have to take,” Charles said. “Then we will interview the suspect. We don’t expect any arrest coming today (Monday).”
