Notre Dame Elementary School can boast of having two winners in the Ohio Severe Weather Committee severe weather poster contest, and to prove it they have a trophy to display for the entire school year.

Friday, a special ceremony was held at Notre Dame Elementary, and the entire student body and faculty turned out to honor overall state winner Ethan Kammer, a sixth grader and the state winner for fifth grade, Mallory Logan.

“We had an awards ceremony for all the regional winners at the (Ohio) State Fair in August,” Kelli Blackwell, Publications Editor for the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, said. “All the regional winners received prizes from the Ohio Severe Weather Committee and then we announced the state level winner and then the overall state winner, which was Ethan this year.”

Kammer’s poster showed a cloud with a lightning bolt going through it and it was framed by tips on dealing with severe weather. The central theme of the poster was – “Keep calm and weather the storm.”

“I came up with the design pretty much the week before. We had a bad thunderstorm and it just made me think of the lightning and how you can prevent yourself from being struck and to protect yourself from the effects of the thunderstorm,” Kammer said.

Kammer’s mother Heather Cate said Ethan’s bedroom floor was completely covered with the multitude of prizes he was awarded for winning the competition which involved all the schools in the state. Finding out he won, came as a surprise to Ethan.

“I was very surprised,” Kammer said. “I’ve never won anything that high before so it was different.”

“This is my first statewide winner in 25 years,” Kim Carver, Director of the Scioto County Emergency Management Agency, said. “They started circulating this trophy in 1983 to the statewide winner’s school, so that’s been on the road since 1983. So it has made its way to Portsmouth. And it’s exciting to know that we have a statewide tornado safety poster contest winner here in Scioto County.”
