A former Daily Times editor has taken out petitions to run for Scioto County Commissioner. A check of the Scioto County Board of Elections shows that three people have taken out petitions for the seat currently held by Doug Coleman and one of those is Ryan Ottney of New Boston, grandson of the late long-time mayor of New Boston, Charles “Burr” Ottney.
“I don’t know yet if I’m going to run,” Ottney responded when asked about his intentions. “I’m considering a run. I have been asked to run.”
Ottney told the Daily Times he was going to meet with Democratic Party officials before making a decision, but he had to take out the petitions before the deadline.
“I haven’t made a decision yet,” Ottney, who is now employed by the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center, said. “I’m just exploring it I would say at this time. I am considering this, but until I file petitions it is not official. All I can say right now is that I’m exploring the opportunity.”
Ottney said the deadline for filing petitions is only a month away, Dec. 16, 2015, so he is on a tight timeline to get petitions signed and turned in should he choose to run.
The BOE said two other people have taken out petitions to run for that seat. Former Portsmouth Mayor David Malone has taken out petitions, as has the incumbent Commissioner, Doug Coleman.
A BOE spokeswoman said the list of people taking out petitions does not preclude the possibility that someone has gone online to take out petitions.
