On Friday the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet dedicated the space between the Carl Perkins Bridge and the U.S. Grant Bridge in Kentucky as the Veterans Memorial Mile.

State Representative Tanya Pullin said the naming of Veterans Memorial Mile was done by the Kentucky Legislators.

“U.S. 23 in Greenup County is called the (John) Collier (Ernie) West Memorial Highway, that’s named for the two Medal of Honor recipients who are Greenup County residents,” Pullin said. “I feel it’s appropriate for this piece of highway that connects to the Collier-West Memorial Highway to be named in honor of all veterans.”

She said the naming of the highway is inclusive of everyone who has served in the armed forces.

Pullin said during the naming ceremony, there were people there representing many different eras of service.

“People should note this is in honor of all veterans everywhere. It’s for anyone who has served in any branch at anytime,” Pullin said. “We wanted to do the ceremony close to Veterans Day.”

Pullin said the section of highway was done through the Kentucky Legislature in the 2015 session.

“We also named a bridge in honor of World War two veterans in May. In August we unveiled the signs for the Vietnam Memorial Bridge. Those two were chosen because of the anniversaries for both of those conflicts,” Pullin said.

Pullin said she is hopeful the signs will be mounted along the highway before or shortly after Veterans Day.
