The Portsmouth Police Department is withholding the name of a 21-month-old child they say suffered extreme injuries as the result of a beating by an adult. Kameron Gallimore, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, is charged with second degree felony child endangering after being arrested Saturday.
Officers said around 4:30 a.m. they were contacted by a Scioto County Children Services case investigator who informed Police that custody had been taken of a 21-month-old male child that appeared to be suffering from both internal and external injuries.
The Children Services investigator said that after initial examination by a local physician, the child had been transported directly to Nationwide Children’s Hospital and taken to surgery. The child was being treated for a laceration to the liver, swelling of his testicles and a broken femur. The child also had bruising between his toes.
Portsmouth Police Operations Captain Lynn Brewer said the examination of the infant determined that the femur fracture appeared to be a new injury but the child also had older fractures to his ribs that had already healed.
During the investigation officers developed Gallimore as the suspect. Gallimore was picked up by officers and taken to the station for questioning.
During his interview, Brewer said Gallimore stated that he had become angry with the child a couple of times and had struck the child with his fist both in the stomach and groin areas. Gallimore was lodged in the Scioto County Jail pending arraignment in Portsmouth Municipal Court Monday morning on his charges.
The case will be presented to the Scioto County grand jury where it is expected that additional charges will be considered and filed against Gallimore.
The child remains in the custody of Children Services and under the care of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Brewer said the boy came through his surgery well and is expected to have a full recovery.
