The race for U.S. Senator has tightened between Scioto County native Ted Strickland and incumbent Senator Rob Portman, according to a new poll in The Hill.

In an early Quinnipiac University poll Strickland, a Democrat, led Portman, a Republican, 49 – 38 and independent voters backed Strickland 50-32. But according to a poll in The Hill, Portman now leads by the slimmest of margins. Portman has 43 percent support, with Strickland at 41 percent, according to a survey released Tuesday from the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling. Fifteen percent said they remain undecided.

The poll shows that 35 percent said they have a favorable view of Portman and 35 percent had a negative view. By contrast, 39 percent had a favorable view of Strickland and 38 percent negative.

Strickland, who grew up in McDermott, Ohio, served six terms in Congress and became Ohio’s 68th governor in 2006, losing his bid for reelection to current governor John Kasich. In 2013, President Obama nominated Strickland to be a public delegate to the 68th U.N. General Assembly. He also served as a senior advisor to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York.

In office since 2011, Portman previously served as the 14th United States Trade Representative from 2005 to 2006 and as the 35th Director of the Office of Management and Budget from 2006 to 2007.
