The Fourth Annual Senior Day Out will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 23 at the Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) Friends Center.

“It’s a free event for senior citizens of Scioto County,” Erica Kegley with Southern Ohio Social Work Healthcare Alliance stated.

Ohio Social Work Healthcare Alliance is a group of like-minded entities, such as SOMC, Community Action and even nursing homes, that all serve the senior population.

“It’s really a club of organizations in the area,” Kegley clarified.

Each year, the organization sponsors as a way to get area seniors to come out for a day of fun but also a way to connect with valuable resources. Kegley explained that the Senior Day Out includes health fair booths.

“It’s a day of fun and free food,” Kegley commented. “It’s a health fair and a party.”

The event will include a variety of activities, vendors, door prizes and music.

“We do give away a lot throughout the day,” Kegley commented before adding that door prizes are given out every 30 minutes.

The event started four years ago after the Senior Expo, which was held at the Scioto County Fairgrounds, lost funding.

In previous years, the Senior Day Out we held at the Scioto County Welcome Center; however, Kegley explained that last year it was clear the event had outgrown that facility.

Last year, there were 1000 people in attendance, including vendors.

“We didn’t even have room for people to sit down,” Kegley said.

All seniors are invited to attend. Nursing facilities will bring out residents; however, independent seniors are all invited to take part in all the day has to offer.

Food for the day will be provided through contributions from the Scioto County Community Action Organization and Life Ambulance. Use of the facility was donated by SOMC.

The Friend’s Center is located at 1202 18th Street in Portsmouth.
