Kroger of Portsmouth and Wheelersburg presented a donation Thursday morning in the amount of $6,000 to Freestore Food Bank of Cincinnati.

According to released information, “Freestore Food Bank is one of Ohio’s largest food banks, distributing 20 million meals annually through a network of roughly 260 partner agencies in 20 counties in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.” Partner agencies in Scioto County include, Pleasant Valley Community of Christ, Grace Baptist Church, and Minford United Methodist Church. Manna From Heaven Food Pantry, Salvation Army of Portsmouth, Scioto County Homeless Shelter of Portsmouth, God’s Pantry of Portsmouth, Potter’s House Ministries of Sciotoville, The Society of St. Vincent de Pail New Boston Conference, Wheelersburg United Methodist Church. God’s Pantry, Neighbor to Neighbor Ministries.

The money donated by Kroger was raised through an ongoing rounding-up campaign at the register.

Kroger cashiers would ask customers if they would like to round up their bill in support of a local foodbank. If, for example, a bill would come to $10.67, the cashier would ask the customer if they would like to roundup their bill to $11, with the difference donated to a local foodbank.

“We’re presenting a check Freestore Foodbank, which helps several food banks there in town,” said Jay Wilson, manager at Kroger of Portsmouth. “We raised the money through coin boxes at the registers and our cashiers would ask if the consumer would like to roundup their bill.”

Wilson said the donated $6,000 will purchase about 24,000 meals.

He said the roundup program has been going on at Kroger for several years and will continue into the future. He said the donation, Thursday is not the first donation made through this program.

Wilson said through this program they are able to impact the lives of a lot of people that use food pantries.
