Portsmouth, OH- Downtown Portsmouth is in full bloom every summer thanks to generous supporters of the Main Street Portsmouth Organization. Last year, Main Street Portsmouth was able to collectively add 26 hanging baskets on Chillicothe Street and 40 flowerpots and several window planters throughout the historic Boneyfiddle district. It is with the generous sponsorship of our local businesses, service organizations, and individuals that the flower basket project was such a success!

“The hanging baskets and flowerpots are planted after Mother’s Day, the last frost date,” says Sue Burke Design Committee Chairperson. “They remain in place through September. We plant petunias in the hanging baskets with the help of volunteers to hang them up. Through the Paul E. Johnson Memorial Fund we are able to hire two people to help water during the growing season. In the fall we refresh the flowerpots up with mums and during the Christmas Holidays we clean them out and decorate with fresh cut evergreens.”

The Design Committee not only maintains the hanging baskets and planters, but also the Front Street Urns, Alexandria Point Park, Market Street Square, Roy Rogers Esplanade, the City Municipal Building, and the 4th Street and 7th Street municipal parking lots.

Main Street Portsmouth has been enhancing and sustaining the visual appeal of parks and streetscape through flowers, plants, and trees since 2003. The baskets and planters bring a fresh and inviting feel to the downtown retail core, helping Portsmouth to be a better place to live, work and play.
