Blenko Glass, one of the oldest handmade glass factories in America, has joined with JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) to produce a special edition piece of glass. $5 from the sale of each piece will go to the JDRF. JDRF is a major charitable 501 organization dedicated to funding Type 1 diabetes research. JDRF’s stated vision is “a world without Type 1 diabetes.”

Juvenile Diabetes is today most often called Type 1 diabetes and is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with age, diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. And, at present, there is no cure.

“JDRF is the leading global organization funding Type 1 diabetes (T1D) research,” Malissa Sarver, dietician at KDMC Ohio, said . “Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested nearly $2 billion in research funding since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion and energy.”

In T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin — a hormone the body needs to get energy from food. That means a process your body does naturally and automatically becomes something that now requires your daily attention and manual intervention. If you have T1D, you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance these insulin doses with your eating and activity throughout the day and night.

The chosen Blenko form is a vase handcrafted to be 10 ½ inches tall of azure blue and having a single, darker, cobalt blue circle on the neck. A blue circle is the symbol for the JDRF. Each vase will bear the signature of Blenko Glass and 2016 on the base.

“It has been very exciting to work with a local company that has a worldwide reach but yet retains that small town feel. Blenko Glass Company has been a family owned and operated company since 1893 and has been located in Milton, W. Va. since 1921.,” Sarver said. “I approached Blenko about a year ago on doing a custom piece for Diabetes Awareness Month and they were very interested in the project and this past summer we finalized the plan. I was able to tell them what I envisioned and they took those ideas and made them a reality but even more beautiful than I imagined. The vase is blue for the color of Diabetes Awareness Month and features a blue circle at the neck of the vase representing the blue circle that is used for the Universal Symbol of Diabetes.”

The vases will sell for $50 each and will available only through the end of 2016. They are available in the Visitors Center shop at Blenko in Milton, W.Va., phone orders may be placed by calling 304. 743.9081 with your shipping and payment information, or online at http://shop.blenko.com/Special-Edition-Items_c46.htm.
