Masteworks Jewelry Studio (MJS), 1501 11th Street in Portsmouth, is celebrating their grand opening Nov. 10-12. MJS is a family affair, owned and operated by co-owners Keith and Stephanie Bowling.
MJS held a ribbon-cutting, and light opening spring of this year, but is now fully-stocked, and more experienced. The Bowlings decided it was now time to launch a grand opening.
“We held a light opening back in the spring, but we really didn’t want to advertise too much, because we needed time to gain more experience, and get more established so that we could get our systems down, and just be prepared,” Keith Bowling said. “We are a new jewelry store in town, and we get asked all the time, what is a Jewelry Studio? Basically, it is a jewelry store, a typical jewelry store where you can see here in small town America where we focus on building jewelry here and doing custom jewelry work here on site, and that is why we called it a Jewelry Studio. Our daughter Candice works here in the store, and does a lot of the work here. My wife Stephanie works a full-time job outside of the store, so she works here on her days off, so she is putting in extra hours. I work on the bench, and do the repairs.”
He said pursuing ownership in the jewelry business is something that developed over many years of service in the business.
“I started working with Roberts Jewelers, many years ago, which my wife’s parents, Charley and Julie Hunnicut owned. Stephanie and I were high school sweethearts, and started working for them,” he said. “Charley taught me how to do build-smithing, being a bench jeweler, he taught me that trade. Since then it has been a life time career for me. It is just something that I have grown to love.”
Candice Bowling store manager at MJS, said the whole experience has been incredible, and really loves giving customers what they are looking for.
“I have enjoyed the journey working here at Masterworks Jewelry Studio. It has an exciting learning experience,” Candice Bowling said. “It has also been very interesting. It is such a great feeling to provide for the people, to see the smiles on their faces, as they get what they come in and are searching for. It is just a great experience.”
Concerning sparkling products, MJS provides a wide variety of bridal jewelry, Citizen watches, diamonds, necklaces, and much more at a wide range of prices, according to Keith Bowling.
“We have prices ranging from $12 to $15,000 dollars,” he said. “We try to have something for everyone. I am a huge fan of Citizen watches, I have owned one for years, so it was the only brand of watch that I wanted bring here. They are very high quality, but yet at affordable prices. We also have Two Stone diamond jewelry that is very popular right now. But our main focus is repairs, and custom jewelry. We try to do as many inhouse repairs as we can, as many people don’t like to have their jewelry sent out. We are just extremely glad to be here, and to provide quality merchandise to the community, and just welcome people to come on out and see us.”
MJS special hours of operation during the grand opening are Thursday, Nov. 10 and 11 from 9:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
