In the upcoming general election, the voters of Scioto County are being asked to choose between Cathy Coleman and David Malone to fill one seat as Scioto County Commissioner.

Coleman was appointed by the Scioto County Republican Party to fill the unexpired term of her late husband Doug Coleman. Doug Coleman was nearing the end of his first term as commissioner when he passed away after an illness. Cathy Coleman was also chosen by the party to replace him on the general election ballot.

Prior to being appointed commissioner, Coleman spent several years in the construction and business industry. She believes that experience will help her if she’s elected.

Malone has spent several years in various leadership positions within the city of Portsmouth. He believes that experience will help him if he’s elected.

Prior to election day, Coleman will have been commissioner for roughly eight weeks, with nearly every moment of that of that spent developing a campaign strategy.

Coleman said she has learned a lot since being appointed a Scioto County Commissioner and is continuing to learn more and more each day.

“There’s a lot to catch up on, I feel like I’m going back four years and trying to catch up on all of that, so I can be up to date. I’ve had a lot of homework and trying to run a campaign,” Coleman said.

Malone said one of the things motivating him to seek the office of commissioner is the experience he gained while serving in leadership roles in the city of Portsmouth.

“Given my experience in city government, this is an opportunity for me to be able to expand my opportunity to address issues in the county as I did in the city,” Malone said. “I’ve been a public servant all of my life and this is another opportunity to serve the people.”

While trying to gain the most knowledge about current issues facing the office of commissioner, Coleman and her family have been going door-to-door throughout the county asking for support.

Coleman said the support she’s received has been overwhelming.

She said one of the most commonly said phrases said to her, since taking office is, ‘no one can fill Doug’s (Coleman) shoes.’

“I can’t fill his shoes and I would not dream of it. He had a special way of handling this kind of thing, he knew everyone,” Coleman said. “Everything has been in God’s hands and I’m continually reminded of that.”

Malone said he’s also experiencing mostly positive reactions as he and his campaign works in various parts of the county.

The campaign is going well, I’m very pleased with the progress we’ve made so far and the people we’ve seen. I’ve received a lot of encouragement throughout the county,” Malone said.

Both candidates agreed there are a number of issues facing whoever is elected to the office of commissioner.
