Investigators discuss the crime scene at at shooting that claimed the life of a Portsmouth man Tuesday morning

Portsmouth Police have not identified the name of a man who was shot to death in a double-shooting incident in the city Tuesday morning. According to Operations Captain Lynn Brewer at the scene on Summit Street just off Grant Street in Portsmouth, police were alerted to reports of gunshots on that street in the early morning hours.

Brewer said they responded to the scene and at the same time got word that someone had been brought into the emergency room at Southern Ohio Medical Center suffering five gunshot wounds. While some officers remained at SOMC, others returned to the scene of where the shots were reportedly heard, seeking the individual who fired the shots.

“One of our officers saw a door ajar and at five in the morning, that is unusual,” Brewer said. “They entered the apartment where the door was open and found a deceased male. We contacted BCI to come and process the scene.”

Early Tuesday afternoon the BCI crime scene team was at the scene of the shooting and had it blocked off with yellow tape. Several detectives were there as well.

Have you identified the deceased male?

“No, we haven’t identified him yet?” Brewer said.

Brewer said the man who was wounded has been identified as Ryan Harris.

“He was taken to a hospital in Huntington and he is expected to survive,” Brewer said.

There is no word as to any leads in making an arrest in the case.
