Back in my radio days we used to hold drives in which we filled numerous trucks with cleaning supplies and other items to send to disaster victims as far away as Florida and as close as New York. I was always thrilled to see us fill truck after truck thanks to the people of the southern Ohio community.

Now, my friend Darrell Nickles and the folks at Lifepoint Church are asking for donations of baby supplies and cleaning supplies for them to taken to the victims of the devastating floods in West Virginia.

Keith Bowling and June Claypool of Lifepoint, have parked a truck, donated by area businessman Sean Boldman, on the parking lot of Masterworks Jewelry Studio at 11th and Offnere streets in Portsmouth, and they are asking you to bring “Baby supplies – diapers, formulas, wipes, things like that, as well as bottled water and cleaning supplies – bleach, Pine-Sol, mops, brooms, sponges and rags and buckets.

The supplies can be brought to that location between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. daily through Friday and they will be delivered on Saturday to a church in West Virginia who will see that it is all distributed where it is needed most.

The Lifepoint family has shown time and again a willingness to help where needed in the community. If people in the community have a need, they know they can count on Darrell and the congregation at Lifepoint to help, and this is just another opportunity for them to do just that.

I would like to urge everyone to just take a few dollars and pick up supplies to bring to the truck. As June told me, you can spend $5 dollars at a movie, or spend $5 to get some baby wipes. I can’t even being to understand what a young mother and father must feel to not be able to provide the necessities for their babies. It must be the most helpless feeling possible.

Let’s do something extraordinary. Let’s fill this truck fast and cause them to have to rent another truck, and fill it as well. I am only suggesting that because I know the people of this area. After 40 years in the broadcasting industry and 15 years in the newspaper industry, I have come to know that the people of this section of Ohio and Kentucky respond when called on for assistance.

I believe in you and know that you will provide where it is needed, so I want to personally thank you in advance for your caring and giving.

Matthew 25:35-40 reads – “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
