Shawnee State Forest programs for April

Naturalist Programs

APRIL 1 — Whipple Wildflower Walk, Discover one of the area’s most colorful displays on this amazing walk through a state nature preserve where wildflowers blanket the earth among dolomite rock cliffs with breathtaking views of the Ohio River. This is a moderate 2 mile loop. Pack a lunch, dress in layers, wear sturdy hiking boots. Meet at the Lodge Lobby

APRIL 8 — Canoe and Kayak Training, 8 a.m. This 8-hour course will teach paddling skills, water safety tips and rescue techniques. Pre- registration only at 740-858-6652 or by email to [email protected] Meet at the Nature Center.

APRIL 13-18 — Arc of Appalachia Wildflower Pilgrimage, Pre-registration only http://arcofappalachia.org/wildflower pilgrimage-registration/ $135/person

APRIL 23 — 51st Annual Trout Derby, 6 a.m. Come on out and try your hand at Trout Fishing. We’ll have prizes for all ages, a passport to fishing program for beginners, free voluntary boat inspections by the Division of Watercraft and much more. Look for additional flyers posted around the park. Fishing contest on Turkey Creek Lake from 6:00a.m.-2:00p.m.

APRIL 29-30 — Morel Mania Friday, 7 p.m. at Shawnee Marina Join Julie, the mushroom lady, for an informative talk; including tips on: how to find and identify edible varieties, favorite recipes, colorful photos, art work, toxic varieties and much more. varieties and much more. Saturday, at the Campground Amphitheater 10 a.m. – How to find Morel Mushrooms. Which trees do morels grow under, which side of the hill to hunt on, season and tips from other Morel Maniacs. 11: a.m. – Morel Mania Competition. Go out and hunt for 2 hours and return with your stash. 1 p.m. – Bring your shrooms to the Campground Amphitheater to see who found the most, the biggest, the smallest, the funniest looking etc. 2 p.m. – Great Mushroom Cook off. Group effort to clean, prepare and cook the findings from our competition. Share and taste our treasures!
