The Portsmouth Kiwanis Club is planning a major fundraiser for Friday with a Casino Night taking place from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Elk’s City Club, 544 Fourth St., Portsmouth.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the price is $30 single and $50 couple.
Proceeds will benefit Kiwanis Tracy Park Playground Fund, an initiative by the club to raise funds to build a public playground in Tracy Park.
“We have a new playground design concept now under consideration with a riverboat theme that is consistent with the area’s history and brings a nice atmosphere to the set,” said Kiwanian John Johnson, who is co-chair of the project with Rick Morgan.
“This event is our last major fundraiser for the project. It’s an opportunity for someone to have a lot of fun and help us reach our goal to build a playground of this caliber.”
There will be hor d’oeuvres served throughout the evening, a cash bar and door prizes.
Games include craps, poker, Black Jack, putting green and roulette. Players will receive play money to use throughout the evening.
“Starting around 10 p.m. we’ll be auctioning off donated items which will be paid for with the play money won at the games,” Johnson explains.
“You really do have an opportunity to win things by betting with your play money and then spending on these great auction items.”
One of the door prizes is a $100-value ticket for the $10,000 cash raffle to be held Sept. 19 during a”Kid’s Day” celebration. Tickets for the Kid’s Day raffle are available through July 15 from any Portsmouth Kiwanis Club member.
Tickets for Friday’s Casino Night are available at Morgan Brothers Jewelers, Crystal Care Nursing Home, Dr. Robin LaValley, O.D., National City Bank-Portsmouth, and tickets will be available at the door.
Johnson also noted that anyone can make a tax-deductible donation for the Kiwanis playground project at any time through the Scioto Foundation’s Kiwanis Community Playground Pass-through Fund, PO Box 911, Portsmouth.

This will be a wonderful, positive addition to the community!!! I would like to know how to begin project such as this. I have a child that attends Vern Riffe School and those children desperately need and deserve a wonderful playground. Most of the schools in our county are newer or are being built and they all have nice, safe, equipment for the children. The students at VRS deserve the same. Their playground consists of a few swings and a basketball court. There is very little for most of the children that attend this wonderful school to do. Any information that could help these children have a safe playground like so many other schools, please let me know.
