Joan Peebles, 90

Joan Wissler Peebles, 90, of Waverly, Ohio, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Heartland of Portsmouth. She was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Chillicothe, Ohio, to the late Arnold Wissler and Ina Webb Wissler. She began her career as a registered nurse in the mid 1950’s with Portsmouth General Hospital which became Scioto Memorial Hospital. She was head nurse of the pediatric unit for many years and retired from Scioto Memorial Hospital in the early 1990’s.

Joan was a United States Naval Service nurse during World War II. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Peebles.

She is survived by two sons, John (Barbara) Peebles of Laughlin, Nevada, and Daniel (Carol) Peebles, of McDermott, Ohio; two daughters, Elizabeth (James) Long of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Helena (Steven) Jones of Loveland, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Christ’s Community Church, 25th Street and Thomas Avenue, Portsmouth, Ohio, with pastor Ralph Clay officiating. Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to SOMC Hospice, 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662, or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Arrangements are under the direction of F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth.
