Just minutes after he was involved in the arrest of a robbery suspect, Michael Hamilton, flanked by his wife, Kim and his daughters Morgan, Caylie, and Cassidy, was administered the oath to become the newest lieutenant on the Portsmouth Police Department.

Portsmouth Mayor David Malone administered the oath to the 13-year veteran of the department on the steps of the Portsmouth Municipal Building. Hamilton’s daughters removed his sergeant’s badge and replaced it with the new lieutenant’s badge.

“I couldn’t be in this spot without the prior officers that I have worked with in the past and in the present,” Hamilton said. “I appreciate everybody that has helped me get to where I am today. I thank my family and the good Lord above, they have offered me the opportunity to do this for the city.”

Hamilton said he joined the force in 1999 after receiving a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice/law enforcement from Ohio University.
