NEW BOSTON — A simple traffic stop turned into much more Thursday morning when two men were arrested for possession of heroin and marijuana.
According to New Boston Police, Patrolman Josh Carver conducted a traffic stop in the 2400 block of Gallia Street for an improper turn violation at about 1:14 a.m. Thursday. During the stop, Carver determined the driver, Ryan Thomas, age 32, of Wheelersburg, was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and he was taken into custody.
A passenger in the vehicle, Josh Hatfield, age 20, of Portsmouth, was asked to exit the vehicle for it to be impounded. At this time, Hatfield reportedly advised the patrolman that he had placed some baggies of heroin and a set of digital scales under the passenger seat. Carver searched the vehicle and found several small baggies that field tested positive for heroin.
Thomas was charged with OVI, driving under suspension, improper turn, possession of marijuana, two counts of drug paraphernalia, and two counts of felony possession of a Schedule II substance. Hatfield was charged felony possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.
Both Thomas and Hatfield were transported to the New Boston Police Department for booking and processing, and later transferred to the Scioto County Jail.
