Vernon Burton, 86

Bishop Vernon Edgar Willard Burton, 86, of West Portsmouth, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born March 24, 1926, in Gould City, Mich., a son of the late Delbert and Norma Eloise Dutcher Burton.

Vernon was retired after 17 years as a laborer at the former Dayton-Walther Foundry, and he was the pastor of the former Church of Jesus Christ on Carey’s Run. He was a Navy World War II veteran.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Aileen Clara Swords Burton, whom he married April 16, 1949 in Greenup, Ky.; two daughters, Rosanna (Jeff) Cope Carroll of Lincolnton, Ga.; Velveeta (Rodney) Neace of Portsmouth; five sisters, Avis Kidder of Michigan, Monna Fenske of Tallmadge, Ohio, Ann Hanson of Kankakee, Ill., Sharon Powell of N.J., Veldean Richards of Mich.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Harold Alvin Burton; and two brothers, Stanley and Carley Burton.

The family will receive friends at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with interment following in Mershon Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the James Dickey Post Honor Guard and Rev. Sam Pennington will officiate the graveside service.
