Welcome to “Do You Have What it Takes?” monthly personal development program for the month of November.
November represents a season of thanks and giving where community and family comes together in appreciation for what we have, where we have been, and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.
Being thankful and giving both involve a connection with positive emotions producing lasting effects within yourself and with other relations as we demonstrate our appreciation through kind words, actions, and non-verbal communication (your hugs, kisses, smiles, and other encouraging gestures)
An important way to give and make a great difference in the lives of others is to eliminate the assumption factor when coming together to accomplish a goal or task.
Assuming that your partner or team member can read your mind and knows all the details and steps of your plan is taking for granted their valuable time. This may result in personal conflict, an incomplete or incorrect product, and loss of time.
To give quality time and build healthier relationships try eliminating assumptions by following these simple steps:
1. Set a time to discuss your needs
2. Allow for equal sharing time
3. Listen to the response of your partner
4. Paraphrase or restate what you think your partner said
5. If you disagree, set a near future time to talk allowing you time to come up with a alternate plan or compromise benefiting everyone involved.
Listening and understanding a request or a goal is the key to giving your best to create a healthy relationship. The result is two satisfied persons who were heard, understood, and given valuable time and attention.
In concluding, I challenge you to give quality time to yourself and others by eliminating the assumption factor. The result is a win-win for all parties. As you eliminate assumption, you reduce wasted time and your chances of being disappointed through the use of a few simple but important steps.
Now, that is something to be thankful for.
