The public is being invited to the third annual Community Celebration, Dec. 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the Vernon Community Center, located at 4168 Turkey Foot Rd.

“It’s our annual Christmas Party and Tree Lighting,” Myrtle Barber, one of the organizers, said. “We’re also going to have all of the refreshments.”

Barber said refreshments will include sandwiches, chips, cookies, cupcakes, pumpkin bread, popcorn, cotton candy, hot chocolate, punch and coffee. She also said the setup will be different this year.

“You can get your goodies and relax in the other rooms to enjoy live caroling throughout the evening,” Barber said.

The band “Try New” will perform Christmas carols for the event.

“We will have Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus and their sleigh,” Barber said. “You see them a lot in parades in the area.”

Barber said the party is free to anyone who wishes to attend. She said donations are collected through the summer and fall months to buy toys for the children in attendance.

“All of the kids that are there get a toy,” Barber said. “And Santa gives each one a candy cane.”

Barber said there is one central goal of the event.

“We just want our community to come together and celebrate the season,” Barber said.
