SSU Sports Information

SSU women’s basketball came in at No. 12 in the most NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The Bears received 175 voting points in the first regular season poll. They were ranked No. 2 in the preseason poll.

The Bears are currently 8-2 overall and 3-2 within the Mid-South Conference. The 2012-13 campaign saw the Bears run off five straight victories to open up nonconference play, including wins over Daemen and Trevecca Nazarene.

SSU then jumped into MSC play with a win over then-No. 18 Cumberlands. The Bears were dealt their first home loss vs. Cumberland, a team ranked seventh in the most recent poll. In their most recent competitions, the Bears have taken down Rio Grande and Pikeville before falling to UVA-Wise in their most recent game.

Three players are currently averaging double figure scoring totals this season. Alex Pohl leads the team with 13.4 points per game, while Schera Sampson and Alannah Sheets are averaging 13.1 and 11.0 points per contest through 10 games. Pohl and Sampson are also pulling down over eight rebounds per contest.

Shawnee State is currently the third-highest ranked team amongst MSC schools. No. 7 Cumberland and No. 11 Campbellsville are both ranked ahead of the Bears after undefeated starts to conference play. Cumberlands (No. 16), Georgetown (No. 18) and Lindsey Wilson (RV) give the conference a total of six teams that are receiving national recognition.

Women’s basketball will be back at home this Saturday for a 2 p.m. game vs. Marian. The next Coaches’ Poll will be released on Dec. 10.
