‘Burg boys, Waverly girls claim SOC XC crowns

The Wheelersburg boys and the Waverly girls cross country teams captured the 2012 Southern Ohio Conference cross country titles in Saturday’s race at Valley High School.

The Pirates’ 19 points was led by race winner Max Conley. His time of 17:42 was 17 seconds faster than teammate Brandon Adams’ run.

Western captured runner-up honors as the Indians used a tiebreaker to edge Minford. Waverly was fourth and Northwest was fifth.

On the girls side, Rachel McCambridge’s runner-up finish with a 22:44 paced the champion Tigers. The girls race was won by Wheelersburg’s Lauren Bays, who crossed the tape six seconds before McCambridge.

Oak Hill finished second, the Pirates were third and the host Indians were fourth. Their coach, Linda Scarberry, along with Wheelersburg’s Gary Johnson were named conference coaches of the year.

The first 14 placers in each race were named All-SOC. The top seven received First Team honors while Second Team go to the second seven.

The attention for all of the area cross country teams now shifts to next week’s district meet. The Southeast District meet for both Divisions II and III will take place next Saturday at the University of Rio Grande.
