PDT Sports Report

Portsmouth traveled to Gallia Academy Friday night under the shadow of a hazing controversy but battled the victorious Blue Devils to a 49-21 finish.

“We played under some tough circumstances but the kids played as hard as they could with some tough odds against them this week,” Portsmouth coach Curt Clifford said.

Portsmouth opened the scoring with a 12-yard pass from Brandon Wedebrook (17-26-2 219) to Alex Dickerson with 4:09 left in the first quarter, but Gallia Academy answered with a 30-yard Wade Jarrell run two minutes later.

A 52-yard touchdown run from Ty Warnimont of the Blue Devils made it 14-7 at the end of the first.

Gallia Academy dominated the second quarter with three touchdowns making it 35-7 at the intermission.

However, the Trojans played solidly in the second half with two touchdowns from Dickerson and Johnie Charles (16 rushes, 120 yards).

“We played very well in the second half,” Clifford said.

Gallia Academy added a touchdown in each quarter of the second half to make the final 49-21.

The loss drops Portsmouth to 1-7 but Clifford said his team rallied in the face of adversity. The team is short six upperclassmen because of discipline handed down due to a hazing controversy, and is short an additional five players due to injury.

“Our kids played their butts off tonight and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Clifford said.

The Trojans host Jackson next week.
