Harry Shope, 75

Harry Shope, 75, of South Webster, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at his home.

He was born Oct. 22, 1936, in South Webster, a son of the late Logan Henry Shope and Esther Hannah Canter Shope. He was a 1955 graduate of South Webster High School. He received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1979 from Ohio University. He also holds a Masters in guidance and counseling. He has taught at Shawnee State University, Hocking Technical College and retired as a K-12 Guidance Counselor. Harry had been actively involved in athletics for more than 45 years. He was a charter member of the Southern Ohio Tri-State Baseball/Softball Hall of Fame. He is the first South Webster Jeep to score more than 40 points in a basketball game and later established a single game record of 56 points in the former Detroit Steel Basketball League. He was named All-Star shortstop in the 1977 state championship for the South Webster Jeeps.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Benjamin Douglas Shope; one brother, Lehman Shope and one sister Catherine Shope Boggs

He is survived by his loving wife Mary, whom he married on Aug. 6, 1977; four daughters Greta (John) Dupuy, Alison (Bart) Thornton, Beverly (Rob) Stringer, and Angela (Tommy) Lore; four sons, Greg (Robin) Shope, Fred ( Ronda) Malone, Tim Malone and David (Kristina) Shope; two sisters, Helen Moore and Peggy Blizzard; and two brothers, Logan Shope Jr. and Wilbur Shope; 21 grandchildren, Jodi Dickerson, Rob Rawlins, Lonnie Thompson, Bart Thornton, Greg Shope Tasha Stringer, Logan Stringer, Sabella Malone, Tierza Webb, Destiny Webb, Steven Malone, Pamela Malone, Samantha Malone, Ethan Lore, Kylie Lore, Brieana Lore, Devon Shope, Zachary Shope, Michael Brannon; 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 1 p.m.Thursday, at the Davis Funeral Home in South Webster with the Rev. Larry Moore officiating and interment in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Wednesday and until the services on Thursday at the Davis Funeral Home.
