FRANKLIN FURNACE — Setting the tone early with defense, the Green Bobcats (2-0) was able to use five defensive takeaways to defeat the Lakers of Millersport (0-2), 38-26. The Bobcats were able to come up with timely turnovers and stops, preventing an improbable Lakers fourth quarter comeback.
From the first play of scrimmage, Green forced a fumble and recovered on their own 28-yard line. Six plays later, Bobcats starting running back Robbie Applegate punched the ball in the end zone from the 6-yard line. The score gave Green a quick 6-0 lead with 8:57 remaining in the first quarter after a failed extra point attempt.
The Bobcats defense continued its dominance in the first half not allowing a Millersport first down until mid-way through the second quarter.
On the other side of the ball, everything seemed to be going Green’s way. Applegate again broke free. On their second drive of the evening, Applegate broke several tackles for a 22-yard touchdown run with 11:49 left in the half, giving the Bobcats a 12-0 lead.
The following drive for the Lakers ended with an interception to Clay Applegate, resulting in their second turnover in just over 15 minutes of play.
Seven plays later, Applegate, who finished completing 3-of-6 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, found a wide-open Kyle Frasier going up the sideline for a 46-yard touchdown pass, quickly giving Green an 18-0 lead with 5:31 left in the half.
On the ensuing drive, the Lakers finally broke through the stifling Bobcat defense. Alex Blake, who finished with 11 carries for 113 yards, two touchdowns and a passing touchdown, broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run, cutting the lead to 18-7.
It was the only mistake Green’s defense would make allowing only 110 total yards in the half and only five first downs.
However, Green answered the bell quickly. On their next possession, the Bobcats took only three plays after Robbie Applegate returned the kickoff 44 yards to score again. On a first-and-goal.
Frasier, who finished with 10 carries for 102 yards , three touchdowns and also added a receiving touchdown, powered his way into the end zone for a 4-yard score with 3:47 left in the half, giving Green a 26-7 lead.
After another key defensive stop ending in an interception for the Bobcats, Green entered half time leading 26-7.
The second half paced itself as the same way in the first half. Green used their tough defense as both teams exchanged balls throughout the quarter until Millersport decided to use a little trickery.
Blake, who already had a 62-yard touchdown run faked a run and dropped back and found a wide-open Clayton Moore for a 68-yard touchdown strike, cutting the lead to 26-13 with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter.
The Lakers weren’t finished, after a defensive stop Millersport drove down the field again. Six plays later it was Blake again, tumbling into the end zone for his second touchdown he accounted for in the second half.
The score brought Millersport within 26-19, the closest they been since it was 6-0 in the first quarter, with 11:57 remaining in the game.
The Bobcats woes continued, fumbling the following kickoff, giving the ball right back the Lakers.
However, it was the defense of Green that stepped up once again. Three straight sacks by the defense forced a Millersport punt.
After a both teams exchanged possessions, the Lakers found themselved driving once again trying to tie the ball game. On a second-and-12 on in the Bobcats territory, starting quarterback Jonah Butts tossed the ball in the air only to find the hands of Green’s Andy Chavarria.
Frasier then put all doubts in anyone’s mind, putting the game out-of-reach. In the final 5:14 of the game, Frasier had two rushing touchdowns for 54 yards, putting the ball game out-of-reach of 38-19.
The Lakers scored in the final minute but the game already was won as the Bobcats stayed unbeaten in the 2012 season. Green will travel to East Portsmouth in a match-up of unbeaten teams. Game is set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
