James L. Snyder, 82
James Louis Snyder, 82, of Portsmouth, passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012 at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born Jan. 12, 1930, in Columbus, to the late Dalbert Agusta and Margaret Cecelia Sullivan Snyder.
Jim was a retired Sergeant First Class from the US Army, having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, Combat Medical Badge, Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Citation Medal, and three Good Conduct Medals. James was a member of the 40 & 8, and past member and club manager of the James Dickey Post No. 23 American Legion
Surviving are his wife, Betty Lou Bridwell Snyder, whom he married in Columbus, OH; two children, Gary W. Farney of Portsmouth; and Rita K. Rollins of West Portsmouth; three brothers, Dalbert, John and Doug Snyder; five sisters, Sara “Sally” Eader, Mary Ross, Louise Young, Geraldine “Jerry” Mansker, and Sharon Whitkamp; four grandchildren, Ricky Hardin, Jody Westwood, Ashley K. Farney and Gary Farney, Jr.; several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by siblings, Bobby and Betty Snyder.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Sunday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. Peter Michael officiating and interment in Friendship Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the James Dickey Post Honors Detail.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 1 p.m.
