Herbert Roberts, Jr.
Herbert “Herb” Hobson Roberts, Jr., 86, of Rosemount, passed from this world to be reunited with his beloved wife of 56 years on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Charleston, W.Va., a son of the late Herbert Hobson “Hob” and Charlotte Beatrice Harris Roberts, Sr.
Herb retired as manager from Portsmouth Mixed Concrete where he worked for many years, and he was a 1944 Portsmouth High School graduate. A member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, he had served as a Sunday School teacher and choir member at the former First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth. Herb had a generous and kind heart, and he supported many charities and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He was an avid and outstanding bowler, and was a member of the Portsmouth Men’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He especially enjoyed participating in the Mixed Senior Bowling League with his wife, Dorothy.
Herb was a World War II Army veteran, having earned the Army Occupation Medal (Germany), the American Theater and European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbons, and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was preceded in death Jan. 2, 2010, by his wife Dorothy Mae Payton Roberts, whom he married Jan. 2, 1954, in Liberty, Ind.
Herb is survived by four sons, Paul Jeffrey Roberts of Columbus, David Andrew “Andy” (Janet) Roberts of Rosemount, Greg (Diane) Roberts of Hillsboro, and Ted Roberts; two daughters, Judith Lynne Roberts of Wheelersburg, and Carolyn (Don) Juillerat of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two brothers, George (Wanda) Roberts of Dayton, Ohio, and Richard (Wyelda) Roberts of Rockledge, Fla.; a sister, Merle Osborne of Berea, Ky.; three grandchildren, Keith William Preston, Cody Rae Roberts, and Paul Abe Roberts; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth with Pastor Tom Charles officiating and interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the James Dickey Post Honor Detail.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 8 pm, and one hour prior to services Saturday.
