Richard Scurlock, Sr., 86
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and faithful friend, Dr. Richard Hampton Scurlock, Sr. 86 of Portsmouth went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Hill View Retirement Center.
Richard was a 1943 graduate of Portsmouth High School and a 1951 graduate of The Ohio State University School of Dentistry. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during this time and was drafted after a couple of months in college. Richard was a World War II Veteran.
Dr. Scurlock practiced Dentistry for 47 years in Portsmouth, Ohio; his son, Steven, joined him for the last 18 years of his practice. He was a member of Second Presbyterian serving as Deacon and Elder. Dick also taught Sunday school for 35 years.
Richard was a former member of the Portsmouth Jaycees and was awarded the Jaycees man of the Year in 1961. He was the former president of the Southern Ohio Dental Society, Portsmouth Rotary Club; and a Portsmouth Boy Scout troop leader. Richard thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, tennis player, and water skier.
Dr. Scurlock was also a past board member of the American Red Cross and the YMCA; a past president of the Scioto County Tuberculosis Association, a supporter of Ducks Unlimited, and a member of the Portsmouth Elks.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Troy McKinley Scurlock and Louise Peyton Shriver, his wife of 46 years Mary Ann Babcock Scurlock (1993), and a granddaughter, Megan Louise Bowman (1987), preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Roberta Maddox Scurlock of Worthington, Ohio, whom he married in 1995; his sister, Laura Hampton of Worthington, Ohio; children, Richard Scurlock Jr. and his wife Robin (Yontz) of Louisville Ky., Steven Scurlock and his wife Debra (Hicks) of Portsmouth, Susan Scurlock Bowman and her husband Tim of Canton, Ohio, David Scurlock and his wife Mary Coblentz of Wooster, Ohio, Jennifer Scurlock Young of New Albany, Ohio and Mark Scurlock of Sarasota, Fla.
He is survived by 12 grandchildren, Richard Hampton Scurlock III and his wife Misty of Richmond, Ky., Justin Shea Scurlock of Nicholasville, Ky., Ashley Paige Williams and her husband Raleigh of Louisville, Ky; Brandon McKinley Scurlock and his wife Janel of Pinedale, Wyo., Bronwyn Louise Scurlock and her husband Will Breitigam of Fort Collins, Colo., Barrett James Scurlock and his wife Katie of Henderson, Nev; Jessica Ann Bowman Miller and her husband Matt of Austin, Texas, Matthew Paul Bowman of Austin, Texas, Joseph Christopher Bowman and his fiancé Jillian Noggle of Columbus, Ohio; Sasha Louise Young of New Albany, Ohio, Sophia Peyton Young of New Albany, Ohio, and Sheridan Haley Young of New Albany, Ohio; Seven great grand children Isabella and Piper Scurlock, Lauryn, and Gwendolyn Scurlock, Avery, Ayanna, and Aislyn Breitigam.
Dad taught us all to love life, give thanks, and live each day to the fullest. He loved his faith, his wife, his family and his friends. All of us will dearly miss him until we meet again.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday July 16, 2012, at Second Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Stanley Webster officiating. Internment will be in Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg, Ohio. The Honor Detail of James Dickey Post American Legion Post 23 will conduct military rites. Visitation will be noon until 4 p.m. Sunday at F. C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth.
