The Scioto County Relay For Life was held Friday and Saturday at the Scioto County Fairgrounds. The fundraising goal for this year’s event was $94,000 and the total money brought in topped $117,000.

“This tells me that more and more people throughout the community are learning about Relay For Life and are getting involved with a passion to put cancer to an end,” said Rosie Williams, chairwoman of the Scioto County Relay for Life.

At the start of each year’s relay, survivors walk around the track. Tim Shepherd, a 35-year cancer survivor led this year’s survivors lap.

Williams estimated 500 people attend2ed the event’s opening ceremonies.

“This is our biggest year yet. We have 38 teams that have joined the relay this year. All of this is just amazing,” Williams said. “We’ve added tons of new teams. There is a lot for us to be excited about.”

Relay For Life is one of the biggest fundraisers for the American Cancer Society.

In 2011, more than 258 Scioto County residents were directly helped by free local programs and services, including the Patient Navigation Center, Man-to-Man, Hope Lodges, Look Good Feel Good, and Gas Cards.

According to www.relayforlife.org, “Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer.”

That's my grandmother(Sis Royal) in the wheelchair and my grandfather(Lawrence Royal) pushing her! They are both Survivors. Mammaw just celebrated her first year cancer free and Pappaw beat his about 16 years ago. So proud of them and so thrilled about the outcome at Relay this year! My cousin Samantha and I are the team captains of Venturer's For A Cure, a Boy Scouts of America team and this was our 3rd year. We are already planning fundraising ideas for next year! I can't wait! If you have never attended a Relay For Life event, you are truly missing out. It's free to the public, there is a lot of things to do and you are helping such a wonderful cause. I will continue to do it until there is a cure!
