NEW BOSTON — With the economy struggling and the price of gas soaring, don’t you wish there was a vehicle you could buy for less than $3,000 that also got 100 miles to the gallon? Well, there is — at Wagner Custom Golf Carts and Parts in New Boston.

“We’ve been an EasyGo dealer since the mid-80s,” said owner Dave Wagner. “We were able to get a lot of golf carts that were off-lease. We sell new, too, but most people aren’t interested in buying new golf carts. They just want used ones. So we would buy two-, three-, four-year-old used golf carts and re-sell them.”

A new cart sells for about $7,000, but a used cart goes for only about $2,500. The carts run on either electric or gas, and gas-models get as much as 100 mpg.

For only about $800 more, Wagner’s can make your cart made street-legal by installing turn signals, a windshield, and brake lights. You can drive them on any public street that permits traffic speed of 35 mph or less, if the city has an ordinance to allow it.

“Some subdivisions, like up in Wheelersburg, there’s a lot of them up in there. They drive them around the houses, instead of walking. Probably our biggest customers right now are these RV people at campsites,” Wagner said.

The carts can be customized even more, with a special paint job, tires, rims, lights, radio — just about anything you can imagine. The average job takes only a couple of days, but more elaborate jobs may take much longer.

“We’ve made one up here in Chillicothe that we call ‘Sarge’ and we painted it the olive, Army green, with stars and the Army symbols on it. It’s got a half-windshield and special running boards on it, and some desert tires,” Wagner said.

In addition to sales, Wagner also offers cart rentals and servicing.

Wagner Custom Golf Carts and Parts has operations in all Wagner Rental locations, in New Boston, Chillicothe, Jackson, and Ashland, Ky. They are also available online at www.wagnercustomcarts.com.
