The Portsmouth Trojans reached the .500 mark with an early season victory over Lewis Co. (Ky.) 3-2 Tuesday evening.
Andi Queen picked up her first victory on the young campaign. Queen allowed five hits over seven innings, striking out five batter while walking three.
Portsmouth coach Jessica Blanton was pleased with Queen’s performance.
“Andi threw really well and got stronger as the innings went on,” Blanton said.
With the game tied at two, the Trojans delivered the decisive blow in the home-half of the sixth inning. Semijah Parker reached first on a throwing error by the third baseman. Johnson made her way to second on a Wesleigh Jackson sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the inning, Gabby Guthrie hit a ball to left field, which drove in the game-winning run.
Despite the victory, Portsmouth has a lot of room for improvement as the Trojans struck out eight times at the plate and committed four errors in the field.
However, even though they struggled at times, Blanton is happy with her squad’s willingness to battle until the end.
“We never let up, we kept pushing,” Blanton said. “They fought really hard. We did strike out eight times but when we needed the big hits, we came through. Our upperclassman were huge.”
Earlier in the contest, Portsmouth trailed 2-1 but that deficit was erased thanks to a Peighton Williams homerun to left field in the second inning.
Portsmouth will travel Tuesday to Ironton.
