RACELAND, Ky. — The American Cancer Society of Ashland will kick-off the annual Greenup County Relay for Life fund raiser with a survivor brunch will be held Saturday, April 5, 10 a.m. until noon at Bellefonte Centre on the Our Lady of Bellefonte campus in Ashland.

Karen Sperry, Relay for Life specialist of Mid-South Division, said the brunch is about celebrating cancer survivors.

“We try to have the survivor brunch, or ceremony prior to the Relay for Life event itself because we want to show the survivors how much they mean to our organization. They are the reason that we fight to find a cure, so that we can celebrate more birthdays together, everyone,” Sperry said.

She also said the brunch encompasses all types of cancer survivors, and they would like to them to come out and participate in the survivor’s lap, which is the first lap of the relay.

“Survivors will join together to walk the opening lap, united in victory and hope, while the rest of the event’s participants surround the track to cheer them on,” she said.

A meal will be provided for survivors and their guests at no cost.

“We usually provide a free meal for the survivors, which has been breakfast, but a brunch is what we’re doing this time,” shed said.

The survivors brunch speaker will be Jamez Copley, a cancer survivor, of Greenup County, as well as entertainment and door prizes.

“Luminara will be able to be purchased in honor of loved ones for $10 for a bag, and $15 for a sky lantern that they will be able to put out at May relay,” she said.
