SSU Sports Release
The record setting start to the 2014 track & field season for Brad Liston saw another personal accolade come his way as he was announced as the MSC Track Athlete of the Week for the second time in as many award periods. Liston’s most recent honor comes on the heels of him posting the fastest 5,000-meter time in the NAIA this season at Charlotte’s 49er Classic.
In his lone race this past weekend; Liston broke the school record with a time of 14:29.02 in the 5,000-meter race. That time was a personal best by nearly 25 seconds and broke the school record by more than 16 seconds. That mark easily made the NAIA “A” cut and qualified him for nationals. That time is also the fastest in the country at the NAIA level by just over three seconds this season.
Liston also currently holds the NAIA’s best mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he has qualified for the national championships in both of those events. His steeplechase mark helped him earn his first MSC Track Athlete of the Week honor this season. He is currently the only runner in program history to receive this honor and his done so a total of three times in his career on the track.
Liston qualified for the NAIA Track National Championships in 2011 in the 1,500-meter race and in 2012 for the 5,000-meter race. He also competed in four cross country national championships, posting a career-best sixth-place finish this past fall.
Track & field will be back in competition this Friday and Saturday as the Bears will have competitors going to both the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina and the Oilver Nikoloff Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
