Shawnee State University sophomore Nick Saunders has been named the Mid-South Conference Golfer of the Week as announced by conference officials. The honor is the first of Saunders’ career as he becomes the third golfer in program history to earn this distinction.
The Bears’ sophomore has turned in a pair of top-5 finishes to kick off his spring season. After a fourth-place showing at the Shawnee State Invitational, Saunders tied for fifth individually this past weekend at the Capital Spring Invitational.
Saunders started his tournament with a one-over-par (73) round and came back with a 78 on the second day to finish at 7-over-par for the tournament. Saunders’ opening round of 73 tied for the fifth-best round of his collegiate career.
Saunders has been the Bears’ top finisher in both of the tournaments this spring. His scoring average is 75.5 for the spring. He came into his sophomore season ranked fourth in program history with a career scoring average of 77.2 following his freshman campaign.
The Bears will be back in action next Monday, March 31 at the MSC Spring Invitational. That two-day tournament which is hosted by the Jamestown Country Club will continue into Tuesday.
