The city of Portsmouth is advertising for bids for the hauling and disposal of municipal solid waste and construction debris, as well as bulky waste from the city of Portsmouth’s transfer station. According to the ad, placed by Portsmouth City Manager Derek Allen, the terms of the contract will be effective beginning April 1.
Bid specifications can be picked up at the city’s service garage located at 55 Mary Ann St., in Portsmouth, and questions concerning the job can be answered by calling Bill Beaumont at 740-354-7766. Allen said all proposals must be submitted in a sealed envelope, clearly labeled, “City of Portsmouth Hauling and Disposal of MSW and C&D 2014,” and received at the city of Portsmouth public service department, 55 Mary Ann St., Portsmouth, Ohio 45662, at, or before 3 p.m., March 24, 2014.
Allen went looking for a company to transfer the city’s refuse when the company the city had been contracted with, Pike Sanitation, sold out to Rumpke, and, in turn, Rumpke raised the price of the contract from $264,750 to $600,000 the first year, $637,500 the second year and $675,000 the third year.
Allen was able to buy a little time when Rumpke extended a monthly agreement at $50,000 per month for another 30 days.
Allen said bids will be opened and publicly read Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. in the city manager’s office located at 728 Second St. in Portsmouth.
The ad says the city reserves the right to accept, reject, modify, or negotiate any and/or all proposals or any portion - “thereof in the best interest of the city of Portsmouth, Ohio.”
