With the start of the 2014 state tournament rapidly approaching, the Valley boys basketball team continued its ascension up the Associated Press polls Monday as the Indians find themselves seventh in this week’s Division III rankings.
Valley jumped two spots from last week. The Indians continued their reign atop the SOC II last week with a pair of conference road wins, a 69-49 win Tuesday at Oak Hill and a 75-58 win at South Webster.
Belmont Union Local remains first in the Division III poll, claiming 15 first-place votes. Third-ranked Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph (five) and sixth-ranked St. Bernard Roger Bacon (one) were the only other schools in the division to receive first-place votes. The Indians are still looking up at one other team from the Southeast District as Zane Trace is fifth.
In Division IV, a pair of wins for Peebles wasn’t enough to budge the Indians from 11th. Convoy Crestview remained the No. 1 team in the division.
This week wasn’t without changes to the top. Defending Division II state champion Columbus Bishop Watterson takes over as the No. 1 team in Division II thanks to a 46-38 win over Columbus Bishop Ready, a 75-30 win over Galloway Westland and Norwalk’s 63-61 loss to Mansfield Ontario.
Also in Division II, Logan Elm jumped from seventh to fifth while Athens moves from 12th to 11th.
Lakewood St. Edward maintains its spot as the No. 1 team in Division I. There are two polls remaining for the boys while the girls poll, which will be released Tuesday night, will have one final vote next week.
