Portsmouth Police have made an arrest related to two weekend robberies. On Wednesday, Marlin R. Yates, II, 26, of Portsmouth —also known as Randall Yates, II — was apprehended and taken into custody with the assistance of Kentucky law enforcement. Yates is charged in the robberies of Sherwin Williams Paint Store in Portsmouth on Jan. 11, and 1st Stop Market in Sciotoville on Jan. 12.

Detectives of the Portsmouth Police Department obtained arrest warrants for Yates for two counts of aggravated robbery. Police said information obtained through the assistance of the general public, officers of the Portsmouth Police Investigation and patrol divisions, and various other law enforcement agencies in the state of Ohio and the commonwealth of Kentucky, helped bring the investigation of the robberies to the arrest of Yates.

The robbery at Sherwin Williams occurred around noon on Saturday, then some 19 hours later, at 7 a.m. on Sunday, the 1st Stop Market was robbed. Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware said, while he didn’t know specifics, there were some differences in the way the robberies were conducted.

“Our department would like to thank the public, all media outlets, concerning all the information that was forwarded to us,” a news release from the Portsmouth Police Department read.

Anybody with further information about these two specific incidents should call the Portsmouth Police Department at 740-354-1600 or 740-353-4101.
