GRAYSON, Ky. — Grayson Branch Public Library will soon have a new home.
Nellie Jordan, director of the Grayson Branch Public Library, said they are excited about the new project that is underway, which will cost an estimated $100,000.
“In May, the Board of Trustees purchased a building on Main Street in Grayson. We are in the process of making the necessary safety inspections and renovations to move our Grayson branch, which is presently located on Route 1 just outside of Grayson down to Main Street. The cost for the renovations is estimated at $100,000,” Jordan said.
Jordan said the Main Street location is the old Houck Furniture building that they are renovating. According to Jordan, the Main Street location will be the first permanent housing for the Carter County Public Library system in 25 years.
She said the funds to renovate the Main Street building were provided by two local banks.
“We actually borrowed the money. Two of our local banks in Carter County supported the borrowing of the dollars, and we make quarterly payments on that purchase to one of the banks,” Jordan said.
Jordan said the library is not a tax-supported entity, but receives funding through collaborative efforts.
“We are not a tax-supported district, we do not appear on the property tax bills in Carter County. We are funded through an agreement between the cities of Grayson, Olive Hill, the Carter County Fiscal Court,” Jordan said.
She said the library does receive some financial assistance from the state as a result of the library services that they provide the county population at large.
According to Jordan, the library has several projects are in the works for raising funds to complete the renovations.
CTB Inc. of Catlettsburg is completing general construction work on the library project. Jordan said they plan to have the project complete by the end of March 2014.
