On Monday Portsmouth City Council approved a lease agreement between the city and Notre Dame High School for the use of Spartan Stadium.

According to the lease agreement, “the city is the owner of certain real estate, known as Spartan Stadium, which has served as home field for Notre Dame School football for several years; and the school has made significant enhancements to Spartan Stadium over the past five years and has assumed ongoing maintenance of the grounds, spending thousands of dollars on improvements and maintenance. The school has shared Spartan Stadium with others who have enjoyed the improvements and regular maintenance. The city acknowledges it has an obligation to its citizens to promote community and economic interests, which includes supporting the school by providing valuable facilities, such as Spartan Stadium for the school where a mutual benefit is evident.”

Under the conditions of the lease it outlines, the lease will be in effect for two years ending Jan. 1, 2016 with an option to renew.

The school will pay the city $100 each time the lease is renewed, as long as the school continues to assume responsibility for maintenance of the grounds. The city may inspect the facility at any time.

The school will assist the city in scheduling non-school events for the facility.

Both the city and the school agree that other users will not be charged by the city for use of the facility as long as they abide by the user agreement. The user agreement requires users to obtain insurance for their event.

Under terms outlined in the lease agreement, the city will remain responsible for any major repairs to the facility along with trash removal.

The school is to maintain comprehensive liability insurance while the facility is leased.

The city or the school may terminate the lease with 90-day notice.

Calls to the city service department to inquire on how the scheduling for the stadium will be handled were not returned.
