Portsmouth Mayor David Malone addressed Portsmouth City Council for the last time as mayor Monday night.

At the end of December, Malone will be stepping aside a mayor of the city of Portsmouth as a city manager will be taking control in early January.

Malone addressed members of council and those in attendance during his final mayor’s report.

“This is my final report. It has been a pleasure to serve the city of Portsmouth for the last 10 years with the last three as mayor (Malone previously served as a member of city council). I just wanted to say thank you to all of those individuals who have been there to support and encourage me,” Malone said.

Malone said he wanted to publicly thank each of the city’s department heads.

“They have really been a support to me. We meet every week, I get ideas from them and I bounce ideas off of them. I always told them if they make me look good, I would make them look good and they have made me look good over the past three years.”

Malone then addressed the circumstances in which he first took office.

“When I first look office I inherited a government and a city that was in trouble, with a debt of over $1.1 million in the general fund. I can proudly say I am turning over the reigns to the city manager and to city council, in a much better condition physically and emotionally,” Malone said.

Malone said one of the things he was able to accomplish was elimination of the city’s deficit.

“That’s a good thing. It will be pretty safe to say that at the end of this year we will have a positive balance in our general fund,” Malone said.

Toward the end of his remarks, Malone said to those in attendance, “This is not goodbye, because I really do not feel like my time is up. I have some unfinished business.”

Malone said one of the common questions he is frequently asked is what will he do when he leaves office?

“I’ll continue to do what I’ve always done, be a public servant,” he said.
