Local veterans were granted the opportunity seek out jobs and other resources at Workforce Connection of Scioto County Veteran Expo Career and Information Fair held Tuesday at the American Legion Post 23 in Portsmouth.

The Second annual Veteran Expo Career and Information Fair attracted 15 area employers to meet with veterans who attended the fair.

Louann Valentine, Operations Director of the employment training department at Scioto County Community Action, said this year’s Veteran Expo did not attract as many people as they desired, but accomplished the mission.

“Our attendance was a little down this year, but in talking to our employers, they felt like they talked to quality people. So I guess in this case it is quality or quantity. The employers seemed very pleased and that is all that matters,” Valentine said.

Russell Hicks said he has been looking forward to the Veteran Expo. Hicks is a United States Air Force veteran, where he served for 20 years.

“Recently I finished college at Shawnee State, under the Chapter 31 Vocational Rehab program, and I am looking for a position in my field which is health care. The Chapter 31 counselor told me about this job fair, I re-did my resume, to start look for a new position,” Hicks said.

Hicks said he is hopeful that his qualifications, education and experience will provide for him a new job.

“Scioto County has been very helpful to disabled vets. They give a personal touch, and that is what makes all of the difference,” Hicks said.

Veterans were requested to bring a copy of their resume and to meet with local employers looking to hire. Resume services were also available on site.

Valentine said the Workforce Connection office plans to continue to host the expo to reach out to all local veterans in need of employment.
